    Description

This charming pansy vase is from the Utopian line of Owens Pottery, Zanesville, Ohio. The hand painted pansies of brick red and ochre seem to float under the heavily glazed surface of rich cocoa brown. The fetching, rotund piece is glazed inside and out, the dark brown continuing inside the neck for 1 ½ inches and shading into light brown over the inside walls and floor.
    Measures: 4 7/8” tall x 5 ¼” wide at shoulders x 3 ½” wide at neck and base.
Condition: There are a few small, shallow scuff marks which show when the vase is turned in strong light, but no paint loss. There are two very tiny white spots where the glaze is gone, one on the side and one on the back. A few small spots of extra glaze from the manufacture are near the rim. The interior rounded walls show a few little marks of blue. There is fine crazing under the glaze throughout, standard for high gloss pieces as old as this. The rim has some rough areas when a finger is run along it. There is no real damage, however; no cracks and no chips; overall condition is very fine. White spots and dots in photos are light reflection.
Marked on base with impressed Owens in block letters over 238. This impressed mark, Owens by itself, was used from 1901 on. Owens Pottery operated from 1896-1907, producing art pottery alongside Rookwood and Weller at Zanesville from 1901-1907.
