I bought this 1999 Trans Am LS1 from its original owner 8 years ago, after looking at more than ten of these cars. At that time it had covered 54,000 miles, and is now showing just over 94,000 - an average of 5000 miles a year during my ownership. The car is completely standard apart from one very significant improvement: It is fitted with Koni 'Yellow' shock absorbers (the rears are adjustable). This expensive modification makes a big difference to the handling, while providing good ride quality with proper rebound damping. I had intended to complement the shocks with lowering springs from 'Strano Performance Parts'; however my driveway was too steep, so the car maintains its standard ride height.
I have spent a considerable amount of money over the years to keep the car well maintained. Most recently it was fitted with a new (not reconditioned) alternator, pulleys and belt. The headlight wiring has been repaired/replaced, and both headlamp motors are recent. Within the last 3 years the rear main seal was replaced. I always use fully synthetic oil (currently Pennzoil Platinum with a Royal Purple filter) and oil changes have been performed diligently.
About 3 months ago the Check Engine light came on. The car was taken to Autozone for diagnosis, which brought up fault code PO307 ("Cylinder 7 had too many misfires within a predetermined time"). I understand this is most commonly caused by a fouled plug, or perhaps an issue with one of the coils. However, subsequently the Check Engine light went out, and has not come on since but please be aware that it may do so since the issue has not been addressed. The car was driven recently from Leesburg FL to Pompano Beach (approx 235 miles) with no problems whatsoever.
There is no evidence at all of any prior accident damage, and the underside of the car is in remarkably clean and rust-free condition for a 22 year old vehicle. Paintwork appears to be mostly original, although I did have the front air dam and the lower side body moldings repainted several years ago. Unfortunately I managed to scuff the right hand lower molding in a supermarket parking lot, and there is some peeling of the paint on the front air dam. There are some minor scratches in the paintwork and a couple of stone chips on the hood. There is some cracking on the right hand mirror casing, caused by an drive-thru car wash, and some minor paintwork is required on the rear spoiler after the electric aerial became bent (the aerial needs to be replaced). The 'sail panel' on the car's roof behind the T-Tops has some minor bubbling of the paint - this is a typical issue with these models and is due to seepage of the glue used to mount the composite panel to the metal frame. The issue is minor and it is not due to rust.
The interior is in generally good condition, but there are some imperfections as one would expect with an unrestored car of this age. Very recently the shoulder of the driver's seat has torn at the stitching, as can be seen in the photographs - I am told this should be repairable. Both door cards are cracked, as is the dashboard (it's a Florida car...) although I have fitted a nice dash cover. When I bought the car there was a stain on the rear carpet from a metal can, which I have been unable to remove; otherwise the carpets are in quite good condition, given that they are original, with no rips of wear-through. The steering wheel rim is worn but a leather, stitched 'Wheelskin' has been fitted (I actually prefer the feel and grip to the original). There is some wear to the leather cover for the transmission shifter. The original Monsoon sound system has a few buttons broken, and the knob for the A/C needs to be replaced (these are minor issues which would cost very little to fix). A couple of the plastic grilles for the air vents would benefit from replacement. It seems that some of the speakers do not work, so some attention will be needed there. The lockable T-Tops fit well and I have found them to be watertight. The headlining is perished and should be replaced. For the 8 years I have owned the car, the driver's side window has jerked slightly as it rolls up, although it has never once failed to open or close correctly.
The cruise control, windows, remote central locking, driver's seat motors (the passenger side is manual) and inflatable lumbar supports are all operational.
The A/C blows cold, the automatic transmission shifts smoothly and the motor is definitely not lacking in power. During my ownership of the car it has been driven sympathetically and has never been abused. The main driver of the car has been my fiancee, who has enjoyed it enormously but has always treated it gently. The car comes with its original remote key fob and has a spare coded ignition key. The matching set of BF Goodrich G-Force tires are in good condition with plenty of life left.
I have tried my best to provide as accurate a description as possible. Everyone who knows the car considers it to be a far better than average example, and it always gets a lot of positive comments when parked. Please don't expect it to be perfect but with only modest expenditure it could be an excellent example worth a lot of money. These models have strengthened in value recently and prices are likely to continue to rise. I had intended to keep the car for many more years but I am emigrating and can't take it with me.
