    Description

1780 AUSTRIA Maria Theresa Silver Thaler (28 grams, .833 silver).  This 'thaler' is believed to be the root of the word 'dollar.'
The MTT, also known as the Maria Theresa Thaler (silver coin used mainly in Europe) has a portrait of the Empress on the front. In the portrait and on the coin, she is wearing a widow's veil and a brooch with nine pearls. The inscription is in Latin and means Maria Theresa, by the grace of God Roman Express, of Hungary and Bohemia Queen.
The reverse of the coin shows the imperial double-headed eagle, using the arms of Austria at the center. It is surrounded by four quarters, which represent Bohemia, Hungary, and Burgundy. The inscription on the back is also Latin and means Duchess of Burgundy, Archduchess of Austria, and Countess of Tyrol, 1780.
